In German, “Altweibersommer” means “Indian summer”. The term “weiben” comes from Old German and refers to the artful weaving of cobwebs. On the last warm summer days, it cools down considerably at night so that the dew makes the fine cobwebs visible in the morning. In the sunlight, the threads shimmer silvery and shine like silver-grey strands - an image that used to be associated with the lost “hair” of elderly ladies. These filigree threads were once considered lucky charms.
